Drug Expenditure Longitudinal Trend Analysis

The Ontario Drug Benefit [ODB] program is the largest drug plan in Ontario, accounting for 40% of all prescription drug spending and covers prescription costs for 2.15 million claimants annually.
Combined ODB and claimant costs increased by 57% from $1.1 billion in 1992 to $1.7 billion in 1998 despite little change in the number of claimants.
In-depth analysis of disease categories. Cardiovascular drugs accounted for 48% of the cost increase since 1992. Drugs to treat psychotherapeutic and neurological disorders contributed the second largest portion of the increase at 19%.
